What to Wear for Afternoon Tea

Sarah LafargeAfternoon tea outfits
Afternoon tea is a quintessentially British experience, and the perfect setting to celebrate birthdays, engagements or other landmark events. Afternoon tea is often offered in luxurious and comfortable surroundings such as a hotel or restaurant, making the occasion feel even more special. But what should you wear to an afternoon tea party?
Generally there's an unspoken smart-casual dress code at afternoon tea venues. Smart-casual dressing mixes refined tailored items, such as a blazer or midi dress (this white crepe dress by Ghost is one of our favourites), with dressed-down pieces like a pair of dark wash jeans. Things to avoid wearing to afternoon tea include trainers, ripped jeans, sportswear, large graphic logos, flip-flops and shorts. Some venues, such as the Ritz in London, have a more explicit dress code, with a jacket and tie required and strictly no jeans allowed.
Classic afternoon tea dress ideas
A dress is the perfect all-in-one solution for an afternoon tea outfit and we've a whole host of styles to choose from. From floral midi dresses to sophisticated wrap dresses and elegant shirt dresses the choice is yours. Look for fabrics that echo the occasion: think satin, silk, understated lace or luxurious linen blends.
A classic tea dress is the perfect outfit choice to wear to afternoon tea. This polka-dot iteration by Nobody's Child has a flattering V-neck with long, slightly puffed sleeves channeling an effortlessly romantic silhouette. Available in either black or green, pair with kitten heels and a blazer for a sleek look from head to toe.
Choosing casual afternoon tea outfits
Looking for a less formal outfit for an afternoon tea party? A pair of tailored wide-leg trousers or a sweeping skirt is a more contemporary take and can easily be dressed up for the occasion.
These jacquard trousers by Jaeger have a directional kickflare silhouette. Dial down the dramatic shape by teaming with this soft cream shirt. Finish off the outfit with a pair of striking heels.
For a more casual afternoon tea outfit that still scores highly in the style stakes, we'd recommend this deep blue pleated skirt. Wear with a blouse or a fine knit jumper (cashmere always adds a discreet touch of luxury).
What to wear for afternoon tea in winter
Attending an afternoon tea event in winter requires a little more planning on the outfit front. Balancing warmth whilst keeping your outfit on point is key. Firstly, look for thicker, heavier materials: natural fibres such as wool and cotton always win here. We like this sumptuous velvet dress by Monsoon that's perfect for a winter event.
On the accessories front, swap out strappy heels for dressy knee-high or ankle boots and layer over a blazer or cardigan to add another layer of warmth. Finish with a scarf in a tonal colour. Thermals can lend a helping hand to your winter afternoon tea outfit; our lace-trimmed camisole vest will sit invisibly under most dresses or choose thermal tights for keeping legs toasty during the colder months.
