What to Wear to The Races for Women

Dress codes have generally become more relaxed in recent years however some events, such as Royal Ascot, specify certain outfits depending on the enclosure. Race-day dress codes can range from morning dress (that’s top hat, waistcoat and tails for gentleman) to smart-casual, so you’ll need to prepare and allow time to plan your race-day outfit.
Wearing a dress to the races seems like the obvious choice, but there are other options, too. A trouser suit is a chic alternative to a dress if you prefer a more tailored look, and offers more coverage if the weather is on the chilly side. Pastel or neutral-toned suits create a foundation for showcasing eye-catching accessories, try adding a corsage or statement brooch to create a talking point. An elegant jumpsuit is another alternative to a dress and can look just as smart.
What to wear for ladies day at the races
Formal race days, including ladies days, no longer have a different dress code to everyday race meetings. Dressing to impress is still at the forefront of a ladies day, with attendees wearing their most striking outfits. Dresses of every length are the popular choice, but colourful trouser suits and jumpsuits also make an appearance.
Hats are no longer a requirement for formal race-day attire, but are still widely worn particularly on ladies days. Hats should complement the colour scheme of the outfit and add the finishing touch, whether you choose a fascinator or a larger hat. Consider the weather when selecting a hat: a wide-brimmed hat will offer more coverage from the sun’s rays than a dainty headband. Have fun when choosing race-day headwear and don’t be afraid to showcase your personality.
Casual race-day outfit ideas for women
Now that race-day dress codes are more relaxed, not every visit to the races requires a formal outfit. Wearing a statement blazer or top with jeans and classic, pared-back accessories will make you feel like you've made an effort without getting too dressed up.
If you're going to be watching the races from one of the more relaxed areas at the racecourse, with little or no shelter from the elements, we suggest that you veer towards choosing comfortable, practical, weather-appropriate clothing and shoes. Checking the weather beforehand is key and having a trench coat, hat and sunscreen to hand are a good idea.
