What to Wear Running in All Conditions

Em NewtonWhat to wear running in all weather
Spring, summer, autumn or winter, what you wear on a run directly impacts more than just your performance. Weather-appropriate layers prevent injuries by regulating body temperature and keeping muscles functioning well.
For women, no run should begin without the right sports bra. And comfortable trainers are a non-negotiable for everyone. If you haven’t already, read our guide to women’s trainers or browse our selection of women’s running trainers and men’s running trainers.
Of course it’s climate dependent, but many seasoned runners choose to run in shorts year-round in the UK. Although if you wear shorts in particularly wintry weather, it’s important to note that you may need to spend more time warming up to avoid injuries.
So, while you may develop a preference for either shorts or leggings, prioritising your core by wearing the right top layers should be your primary focus.
What to wear running in winter
What you wear when running in the cold is especially important because regulating your temperature can significantly reduce the risk of injuries. The secret to the best winter running clothes is breathable insulation.
Your winter running outfit should start with a thermal base layer that is lightweight, warm and breathable. Next, add a mid layer (like a fleece) to provide insulation. If the temperature is below freezing, you’ll also need an outer layer. The best winter running jackets offer both breathability and block wind, rain and snow.
And don’t forget accessories. A hat and gloves are a must because exposed hands and ears can significantly affect both your comfort and performance.
What to wear when running in the rain
What you wear when running in the rain can be the difference between a miserable run and one you enjoy.
If you’re committed enough not to let rain put you off, a waterproof running jacket is nothing short of essential. Choose one that’s lightweight, breathable and has an adjustable hood to keep the rain off your face.
Under your waterproof outer layer, you’ll need a moisture-wicking, breathable base layer. On chillier days, you might want a mid layer too.
If you regularly run in the rain, a trusty pair of waterproof trainers are worth their weight in gold. Salomon do some of the best.
What to wear running in summer
There are three dangers when running in higher temperatures: sweat, overheating and sunburn. Summer workout outfits need to fulfil three purposes: wicking sweat, promoting airflow and protecting against the sun.
While it can be tempting to wear less when the mercury rises, a better idea is to wear clothes engineered to perform in hot weather. To stay comfortable, wear a loose tank top or T-shirt and shorts in quick-drying fabric. A running vest may also be a worthwhile investment for carrying easy-access fluids.
Of course, sunglasses, a hat and sun cream are essential components of a summer running outfit. This advanced water resistant formula from Ultrasun is ideal for hot weather workouts. But did you know some fabrics (like these women’s leggings with Sun Smart UPF50+ protection) provide UV protection too?
What to wear running in the dark
It’s vital that you can be seen when running in the dark, so reflective running gear is crucial. In low-light conditions, this fabric technology bounces light from vehicle headlights back to the driver, ensuring the runner is seen.
The more visible you are, the safer you’ll be, so double down. For example, pair these men’s Goodmove socks with these Underarmour shorts. Or these women’s sparkle print reflective leggings with this Adidas vest top.
But don’t stop there. It’s never a bad idea to supplement this with other accessories such as LED armbands, clip-on lights or a headlamp to ensure you stand out from all angles.
