Your guide to British plum season

Plums are an autumnal stone fruit with juicy flesh and smooth, colourful skin, with a flavour ranging from sweet to tart, depending on the variety. Available from late summer to autumn, British plums are typically in season from August to early October.

John Myatt, our trusted plum farmer, picks only the best plums at their peak ripeness. “We actually grow eleven varieties that ripen at different times across the summer, so we can enjoy our plums at their best for as long as possible,” says John.

These are British, tree-ripened M&S plums, left on the branch for longer so they’re sweeter, juicier, and ready to eat as soon as you buy them. Our trusted farmers are specially trained on how to spot a fit-for-M&S plum, assessing characteristics such as colour and how it feels in their hand.

Spiced plum, raspberry and almond cake

Combine sweet plums with tart raspberries in Tom Kerridge’s almond cake recipe. Ground almonds give a deep, nutty flavour and chewy texture, while a pinch of mixed spice adds a warming kick.
