How is English wine made?

England’s wine industry is booming. New grape varieties, warmer climates and innovative producers mean the country is the perfect place to make top-quality wine. There are sparkling wines that rival Champagne, often made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes. Other varieties often include German grapes, like Bacchus and Reichensteiner. Thanks to the warm, dry climate, the Southern coast is one of the best regions for making excellent English wine.

Move over Champagne, English sparkling wine is making its mark. “There’s no reason English sparkling can’t be better or as good as Champagne,” says senior wine buyer Dror Nativ. Made by the premium producer Roebuck Estates, our exclusive Rockferne Brut is a single-vintage wine with notes of baked apples and ripe peach. Or opt for the Rockferne Rosé, with notes of wild strawberries, pink grapefruit and toasted hazelnuts. For special occasions, pop open some Collection Hattingley Valley English Sparkling Wine, with notes of green apple and freshly baked brioche.

Pair a glass of crisp English white wine with a classic British dish like fish and chips. Crafted in Surrey's North Down, our exclusive English Lily has invigorating notes of pink grapefruit, white peach and lime. Nothing goes better with a cosy bowl of stew or hearty roast dinner than a glass of English red wine. This Balfour Pinot Noir is made in Kent, with lively notes of tart cranberries and black cherry, followed by a gentle hint of spice from oak. This 2022 vintage has a silky texture with a refreshing acidity, making it a good match for grilled meats.

This hazy, dusky-pink English Pet Nat is one to try this summer. Short for ‘Pétillant Naturel’ (French for ‘naturally sparkling’), this unique wine finishes its fermentation in the bottle, leaving the yeast sediment to add flavour, creaminess and light bubbles. Made with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Gris grapes, grown at Heppington Vineyard near the Kent Downs, our Pet Nat Brut is an unfiltered sparkling rosé, with savoury notes of wild strawberries, cranberries, almonds and blossom.
