Expert Advice: What is Hyaluronic Acid?

What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring ingredient with a lightweight, silky texture that easily glides across the skin. Thanks to its ability to hold over 1,000 times its weight in water, hyaluronic acid instantly plumps, hydrates and soothes the skin, effectively trapping water molecules within the skin for an all-day glow. Whether applied as a serum or when included in a day or night cream, it's an essential skincare ingredient for dry, oily or combination skin types.
As well as being a dream to apply, hyaluronic acid offers a host of benefits for all skin types. Primarily, it's a hydrator so you can expect to see smooth, supple skin after use. Hydration improves your skin elasticity, decreasing visible signs of aging often symptomatic of dehydrated skin. Over time, hyaluronic acid helps to support and improve your natural skin barrier, protecting it from environmental damage (which can emphasise the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and dullness). In short, it's a potent ingredient to add to your skincare routine.

The best skincare with hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid is present in an array of products stocked at M&S. Targeted serums deliver an instant burst of intense hydration: Fresh Element's Hydrating Daily Serum and Pai's Back To Life Hydrating Serum are great options if you're starting out on your hyaluronic journey. For a deeper treatment, try Elizabeth Arden's hyaluronic acid capsules – the precise single dose ensures the perfect amount of product every time. When it comes to day creams containing hyaluronic acid, those with oily skins will love Alpha-H's Hide Tide Water Cream for daily dewiness, whereas those with drier complexions may prefer REN's Everhydrate Marine Moisturise Replenish cream. For night, Apothecary's Revive Overnight Cream offers a rich, intensive formula that will boost hydration for up to 72 hours.
