Your 10-Step Korean Skincare Routine

Step 1: Oil cleanser
The 10-step Korean skincare routine starts with a double cleanse and it's worth doing properly.
First up, is an oil-based cleanser. Massage it into dry skin using circular motions to lift make-up, sunscreen and excess sebum, without stripping anything away. Then gently rinse with lukewarm water.
Oily skin? Don't worry, oil actually draws out excess sebum rather than adding to it. If you're new to oil cleansers, try something light like the Skin 1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil. Its water-like texture makes it a gentle first step.
Step 2: Water-based cleanser
This is where the Korean beauty routine's famous double cleanse comes together. The water-based cleanser does the final clean, lifting sweat, dirt and any residue the oil left behind. Simply apply to damp skin, massage gently and rinse with lukewarm water. Feels like too much to do in the morning? Make the double cleanse an evening-only ritual.
For drier skin, choose a cleanser like Medicube’s Zero Foam Cleanser, which contains lemon balm and orange blossom extracts to soothe and hydrate skin.
Step 3: Exfoliator
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, smooths your skin's texture and helps keep pores clear, while also making everything else in your Korean face care routine work harder. Both physical exfoliators (scrubs) and chemical exfoliators (like AHAs and BHAs) do the job well, just in different ways.
If you want something gentle and straightforward, the Beauty of Joseon Apricot Blossom Peeling Gel is a solid choice. Depending on your skin type or the product you buy, this could be a daily or weekly step.
Step 4: Toner
Toners in K-beauty are nothing like the harsh, alcohol-based versions you might remember. These are hydrating, full stop. They rebalance your skin's pH after cleansing and exfoliating, which is key to keeping your skin barrier healthy, something the Korean skincare routine puts front and centre. Think of them as the prep that makes everything else work better.
If you're just getting started, the Biodance Skin Refining Mild PHA Toner is a solid pick, the mild PHA makes it a gentle way in.
Step 5: Essence
Step five is the essence and it's where K-beauty really starts to feel different. Lightweight and deeply hydrating, essences are all about renewal. They're not heavy or greasy; think of them as a boost your skin drinks in. The Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water is a great all-rounder – it works for sensitive skin, oily skin and helps with fine lines, too.
To use, simply pour a few drops into your palms or onto a cotton pad, then gently pat – not rub – onto your face. Patting helps the essence absorb properly and keeps things gentle on your skin.
Step 6: Serum or ampoule
This is where your Korean skincare routine gets targeted. Serums are concentrated treatments that zoom in on specific concerns such as wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and acne. Ampoules are just more concentrated versions, but they work the same way. The TirTir Ceramic Milk Ampoule is a brilliant choice if you need both hydration and barrier repair as it's gentle but effective.
To use, warm a few drops between your fingers, then pat onto your skin. Focus on the areas you want to treat and smooth it over your neck while you're at it.
Step 7: Sheet mask
If there's one Korean skincare step that feels like a treat, it's this one. Possibly the most well-known K-beauty product, sheet masks are soaked in serums and essences that flood your skin with hydration. The Biodance Radiant Vita Niacinamide Real Deep Mask is a firm favourite.
To use, smooth it onto your face and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes, then peel away and pat any remaining essence into your skin. While they’re gentle enough to be used daily, one to two times a week is plenty for most skin types.
Step 8: Eye cream
This is probably the one step of the Korean face care routine you're already doing. The skin around your eyes is thinner and more sensitive than anywhere else on your face, so it pays to use something a little more targeted.
The Skin 1004 Madagascar Centella Probio-Cica Bakuchiol Eye Cream is a great choice. Its silicone-tip applicator does the gentle work for you, plus it contains lots of great ingredients that reduce the appearance of fine lines and generally firm up the eye area.
Pat a small amount around the eye area morning and night, and you're done.
Step 9: Moisturiser
Moisturiser is what locks everything in, strengthening your skin barrier so all those layers can actually do their job. Use it morning and night to finish your routine. What moisturiser you choose really depends on your skin type.
If you want that glossy, lit-from-within look – the glass skin effect Korean skincare is known for – the Medicube Collagen Jelly Cream is worth trying. Its lightweight, jelly-like texture smooths over fine lines and sinks in without any heaviness.
Oily skin? Try the Medicube Zero Pore One Day Cream to keep things mattified. Sensitive skin? The iUNIK Mugwort Calming Cream soothes and hydrates without irritation.
Step 10: Sunscreen
This is the non-negotiable one. SPF protects your skin from UV damage and prevents premature ageing, which is exactly why it's such a big deal in Korean skincare. The Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturising Sunscreen is lightweight and sits well under make-up, so there's no excuse to skip it. Apply it every morning as the final step in your routine, even on cloudy days. Your future skin will thank you.
Want to streamline your routine? Choose a moisturiser that contains SPF 50 and you can skip a step.
