Effortless style essentials for parents

Wardrobe staples are your go-to pieces, the clothes you can effortlessly wear again and again. They're perfect for nearly any occasion, easily dressed up or down, and always make you feel a little more polished.
You might already own most of these essentials, but if not, investing in them now means looking effortlessly put together whether you're at the playground, meeting friends for coffee, or simply falling asleep in front of the TV.
The plain T-shirt
Even with the current trend of logo tees, a simple black or white T-shirt is a wardrobe essential you'll never regret. Whether you prefer a relaxed or fitted silhouette, it complements any style, effortlessly pairing with everything in your wardrobe. Invest in the best quality you can afford, and with proper care, it will be a versatile go-to for countless outfits.

Every wardrobe needs jeans
Finding jeans that fit well can feel like winning the lottery, so, when you do find a pair that look and feel great on, buy at least two pairs. Black and blue jeans are your wardrobe’s best friend for a reason – they go with everything and can work for most occasions. Steer clear of the lighter shades of blue or white, or keep these for child-free days, as they tend to show up the stains more.
When it comes to styles, it’s all about what you feel comfortable in, but you can’t go wrong with straight leg, for both men and women. These are a classic for a reason and will work with everything in your wardrobe. If you want to be more trend-led, try carrot-leg jeans or a tapered fit.
Throw on a pair with a simple T-shirt and trainers for a casual daytime look or dress them up with a blazer for that (rare) night out.

A versatile jacket
A jacket serves two purposes when it comes to effortless style. First, it’s an extra layer, which is always a bonus with the unpredictable British weather. Second, it can make you look instantly put together. Even the plainest T-shirt and jeans combo instantly levels up with a classic black blazer. Plus, bonus points for hiding those baby food stains.
If you prefer a more casual vibe, go for a shacket (a shirt jacket), bomber or denim jacket – and yes, double denim is totally a thing now. Opt for darker colours to hide those messy fingerprint marks.
And for those days when you're itching to get out of the house no matter what the forecast, choose a jacket that can handle a bit of rain.

Trainers go with everything
Parenthood is a marathon, not a sprint, so comfy shoes are essential. Trainers offer the perfect blend of style and support, making them a must-have for busy mums and dads.
Choose a pair with retro flair or a fun pop of colour to add some personality to your wardrobe basics. If you’re more into neutrals, you can’t go wrong with a classic pair of white trainers, which will also pair well with more formal items such as blazers, for a smart casual look.
It’s also a great idea to look for trainers with memory foam insoles or extra cushioning, such as Skechers Eden LX trainers, for all-day comfort. Your feet will thank you.

Comfy trousers will see you through most days
If you’re a mum, chances are leggings became your go to throughout your pregnancy and after. But for those days when you want to elevate your look without sacrificing comfort, consider elasticated waistbands. Wide-leg joggers offer a polished yet relaxed vibe, while linen trousers are perfect for warmer weather.
Dads, you can look stylish and comfortable, too. Ditch the gym-style joggers and opt for straight-leg versions for a more put-together look. Cotton cargo trousers are another great option, especially for those baby gym adventures.
