Best in season: September

September is one of my favourite times of year for British seasonal fruit and veg, when the final hurrah of summer crosses over with the start of autumn. The first heritage British apples and vibrant greens appear, alongside tree-ripened plums and the last of the summer tomatoes. I’m also looking a little further afield this month to Turkey, where the short Bursa figs season is something to celebrate. Look out for them in your local M&S Foodhall.

With the days turning cooler and the nights drawing in, I look forward to spending a little bit longer in the kitchen and cooking up some proper comfort food. Keep reading for my pick of what’s in season this month, and what to cook with it.

Tree-ripened plums

Plums are one of my favourite seasonal treats at this time of year – they're the ultimate flavour of autumn. M&S plums are tree-ripened for the sweetest flavour and juiciest texture. Try roasting with a drizzle of honey and using them to top pancakes, porridge or my custardy rice pudding. Alternatively, bake them into my spiced plum, raspberry and almond cake or my buttery plum and pistachio pastries, filled with a rich pistachio frangipane-style filling and sprinkled with demerara for golden caramelised crunch.
