Wardrobe 101: How to Fold Your Underwear and Lingerie
Content editor
Nabeela SaghirHow to fold knickers and thongs
A well-organised underwear drawer starts with a smart folding routine. Not only does it save space, it also keeps delicate fabrics smooth and easy to find.
Lay the knickers flat with the front facing up and smooth out any creases.
Fold the crotch up towards the waistband to create a long rectangle.
Fold in half (or thirds if they’re larger) so they sit neatly upright in your drawer.
How to fold thongs:
Lay the thong flat and fold the narrow back strap up towards the waistband.
Fold the sides in slightly to create a slim rectangle.
Fold once more if needed so it fits compactly alongside other pairs.
The best way to fold and store bras
Knowing how to fold bras – and how to store bras properly – helps them keep their shape and last longer.
Padded and moulded bras:
1. Lay the bra flat with the cups facing up.
2. Fold one cup gently over the other, keeping the cups in shape.
3. Store bras side by side so the cups sit naturally without being crushed.
Non-padded bras and bralettes:
1. Lay the bra flat and fold the straps inward.
2. Fold the band up toward the cups to create a compact shape.
3. Store stacked or upright for an organised, easy-to-access drawer.
How to fold and store tights and hosiery
Tights and hosiery are prone to snags so a gentle, consistent folding method goes a long way. It keeps pairs together, saves space and makes them easy to find when you’re getting dressed.
1. Lay the tights flat and smooth them out from waistband to toes.
2. Fold the legs together lengthways, then fold in half or thirds to create a neat rectangle.
3. For sheer styles, roll loosely rather than tightly to avoid stretching or pulling the fabric.
Store folded tights upright in a drawer or in a dedicated organiser so you can see each pair at a glance. Keeping similar styles together – sheers, opaques, patterned – makes things even easier.
How to fold and store pyjamas and lingerie sets
Keeping pyjamas and lingerie sets neatly folded makes getting ready a little more effortless, and protects delicate fabrics from snags and stretching.
Pyjama sets:
1. Lay the top flat, smooth out any wrinkles and fold the sleeves in. Fold the top in half or thirds depending on your drawer height.
2. Fold the bottoms into a matching rectangle, then stack the set together so it’s ready to grab in one go.
Lingerie sets:
1. For bras and matching knickers or thongs, fold each piece gently as usual.
2. Store the set together in a drawer or organiser to avoid losing pieces. For lace or silk, consider using tissue paper or a small fabric pouch to protect them from snagging.
