Act fast: the longer you leave a stain, the harder it sets. So, it's important to work on removing it as soon as possible. Quickly strip the bed of all bedding and get to work.
Find the right solution: make sure that the cleaning solution you've chosen works on the stain you're removing. For example, when cleaning mould choose a specific fabric-safe mould remover. Alternatively experts suggest sprinkling baking soda over sweat marks before hoovering it up a couple of hours later.
Blot don't rub: rubbing vigorously may feel effective, it can actually 'set' a stain rather than remove it. We recommend you use a blotting motion when applying any liquid solution and always start with a small amount then build it up gradually.
How to spot clean a mattress
Spot cleaning a mattress is always more efficient than trying to clean the whole thing, plus the likelihood is that it's not stained all over. To start, blot the stain with a dry cloth to absorb any excess liquid, then apply cleaning solution directly to the stain (avoid using excess moisture). Finally, scrub gently with a brush and leave uncovered until air dried completely.

How to deep clean and deodorise a mattress at home
We recommend deep-cleaning your mattress every six months, particularly if you're prone to allergies or sleep with the window open in a high-pollen area. We also suggest trying an anti-allergy mattress or a natural mattress to get the best night's sleep possible.
To deep clean, hoover the mattress, spot clean as described earlier, then spritz with a light cleaning mist. Don't forget our tip of sprinkling baking soda over the whole mattress, leaving it for a few hours before hoovering it and making your bed later. Added bonus? This will also prevent mould – it's a win-win.
How to wash a mattress protector and clean a mattress topper
A good line of defence against stains is a mattress protector or topper. The best bit? It can also provide extra cushioning, making your bed even cosier.
When it comes to freshening up a mattress topper, it'll require different methods depending on the composition. If you have a memory foam mattress topper you'll need to spot clean it, however if you opt for one made from cotton, it can be thrown in the washing machine.
