The top spirits and liqueurs for Christmas
Senior Food Editor
Heather TaylorWe’ve pulled out all the stops with our new range of Christmas spirits this year, working with the best producers to create exclusive recipes made with real care and expertise. “I’m so lucky,” says M&S drinks product developer Jenny Rea. “I get to work with the distillers behind our own-label festive spirits, from family-run craft gin distilleries to expert whisky producers in Scotland. Just wait until you try our new spirits range this Christmas.”
Which spirits make for great Christmas drinks?
Wondering where to start when it comes to stocking up on Christmas spirits? Create a ‘capsule bar’ and you’ll have fabulous festive cocktails at your fingertips all season. Our Distilled range means you can curate the ultimate Christmas drinks cabinet with top-quality spirits, sourced from the world’s best producers. Stock up on our top five essential Christmas spirits for the season: five-times-distilled charcoal-filtered vodka, eight-year-ages blended whisky, London dry gin made with our exclusive blend of seven botanicals, 5-year aged French brandy and warming Pineapple and Rum Spirit Drink.
The best Christmas gins to sip this season
If you like it fruity, try our new 16 Acres Sloe Gin, a cosy Christmas spirit made in small batches with seasonal sloe berries. Made exclusively for M&S, it makes a warming aperitif when sipped straight-up, but is equally good in boozy puddings (add a splash to your crumble) or topped up with prosecco. Fancy something more classic? Try our The Curious Heart Spiced Gin. Made by traditional pot distillation in small batches, it contains nine botanicals, including fragrant cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cumin. Top up with tonic or use in a Christmassy twist on a negroni.
The must-try Christmas whisky
Distilled in Scotland, our Kenmore Speyside Whisky comes from the shores of the river Spey. It has notes of butterscotch, toasted almond, vanilla and dried fruits, and is balanced on the palate with a silky mouthfeel. The finish is long, with toasty notes and a hint of marmalade. It’s ideal to serve with your Christmas cheeseboard or mince pies or as a cosy Christmas Eve tipple. It also makes a great gift for whisky lovers. Or shake some up into our warming maple whisky sour.
The top-quality Christmas vodka
Not all vodkas are created equal. Case in point: our Copper Pot British Vodka. Crafted by a family-run distillery using traditional copper pot stills, this small-batch vodka is made with British wheat grain spirit and four-times distilled then charcoal filtered for a crisp, clean finish. With notes of black pepper, it makes a cracking Bloody Mary and is a great spirit to stock up on for Christmas.
The fabulous festive liqueur
Our Mince Pie Liqueur is the spirit of Christmas in a glass. It comes in a stunning light-up bottle that will look super-pretty on your festive table and has all the flavours of a mince pie – from buttery pastry to zesty fruit and rich, spiced mincemeat – in drinkable form. Enjoy it neat, served over ice, or pour over ice cream for a decadent, quick-and-easy dessert.
The reinvented retro fave
The Christmas spirit that deserves a comeback? We’re calling it – this is the year of the Snowball cocktail. It’s all thanks to our exclusive-recipe own label Advocaat, which is made with free-range eggs. This rich, creamy and sweet liqueur tastes of pure festive nostalgia. To make a classic Snowball, pour 50ml Advocaat into a glass filled with ice, add a squeeze of fresh lime, and top up the glass with lemonade.
The best pre-mixed cocktails for Christmas
Shake up a bar-quality cocktail at home with zero fuss thanks to our Marksologist pre-batched cocktails. These premium, ready-to-drink cocktails are created to the highest mixologist standards and designed to replicate the experience of drinking in a top cocktail bar, from the comfort of home. Look out for some must-try new festive additions to the range this year. Our The Marksologist Sloe Gin Sour is made with sweet-but-tart sloe gin, zesty lemon and a hint of betters (it also comes in a super-cute mini size that's great for Secret Santa gifting). Or try our new The Marksologist Blood Orange Negroni, with an expertly balanced mix of London dry gin, red vermouth and Italian bitter liqueur with a hint of orange.
