Preparing for baby's first trip

Remember those carefree days of packing light? Yeah, those might be a distant memory now. But travelling with baby doesn't have to be a nightmare. While that carry-on might not cut it anymore, enjoyable holidays are still within reach.
Before you travel, the most important thing is to make sure you have all the necessary documents.
From birth, your baby will need a passport for any trip where you leave the UK. And yes, getting a decent passport photo of a baby is a whole new level of hilarious.
Don't wait until the last minute for this process. While the Passport Office estimates a three-week turnaround (or one week with the fast-track service), it's wise to allow a couple of extra weeks to avoid any unforeseen delays.

What to pack?
Packing for a holiday is already a headache but throw in all the extra baby gear and it's enough to send your stress levels through the roof. The golden rule? Make lists. Lots of them. And start packing way ahead of time. Your future self will thank you.
Choosing between taking the car seat or going without, and deciding whether to borrow a travel cot or just buy one... sound familiar? But let's talk about the real star of baby travel gear: a lightweight, collapsible stroller. It's a lifesaver, especially one like this Mamas & Papas model designed for easy everyday use.
And while most airlines are fine with checking in a buggy for free, double-check before you head to the airport to avoid any surprises. The experts at Mamas & Papas also recommend checking the folded pushchair dimensions with your airline, particularly if you plan on storing it in the overhead compartment in hand luggage.

Something to entertain them
Bringing familiar toys and their favourite soft toy or blanket will keep baby entertained and happy during the journey.
If you're heading off on a plane or train, maybe skip the noisy toys and choose something quieter, like these stacking chicks, to keep your little one happy without driving your fellow passengers bonkers.
Timing is everything. If you can, try to travel around baby's usual nap schedule. This will help keep their routine on track and make the journey less stressful for everyone involved.
And for those fun adventures once you reach your destination, pack toys that easily attach to the pushchair. This means fewer toys lost in the sand or under restaurant tables.

Holiday wardrobe
Just like you, baby needs holiday clothes, especially if you are jetting off to sunnier climes.
Obviously if you intend to swim, there’s SPF swimwear to protect them from the sun, alongside the all-important swim nappies. Then there’s the hat. These are super important for babies, offering crucial protection even though they can be tricky to keep in place.
Choose breathable fabrics – such as lightweight cotton – when it comes to sleepsuits and vests as these will keep your little one cooler.
When it comes to sleeping, choose the lowest tog sleeping bag you can find – such as 0.5 – to ensure baby doesn’t get too sweaty.

Of course, you might want to throw in a few dressier outfits for dinners out and perhaps a couple of warmer layers for cooler days.
And the general rule of thumb is pack more of the basics such as babygrows and bibs, as invariably they will need several outfit changes a day.
And while a whole new wardrobe is super cute, don’t get so distracted that you forget the essentials. Remember to pack nappies, portable changing mat, wipes, nappy cream, formula, if using, and all those other baby essentials.
Then, all that's left to do, with a touch of Tetris-like magic, is see if you can squeeze in your own holiday clothes.
