How to Wear and Style Scarves

Else HuttWays to wear scarves: the basics
Scarves have long been a staple in any winter wardrobe. From chunky to lightweight and colourful to neutral, they come in many shapes and styles, making them the ideal finishing touch to any cold-weather outfit.
When choosing a new scarf, think about the season you're buying it for. For transitional weather typically in spring or autumn, we love a lightweight silk scarf. Whilst during colder months, nothing beats a chunky cashmere or wool style for added snugness.
If you're unsure on how to style a scarf, try simply draping it around your neck and over your shoulders. Or, finish by looping it through to create a loose knot.
How to wear silk scarves for a touch of elegance
Silk scarves are the ultimate fashion accessory. It-girls have been donning them since the 1940s (even wearing them over their blow-dries). And this year the wardrobe multitasker is back.
But, how do you give a classic silk scarf a new lease of life? Firstly, you can’t go wrong by knotting it around your neck with a simple white T-shirt. We love Jaeger’s floral style paired with Autograph’s white tee.
Alternatively secure it around the handle of a handbag, or wear it as a hair tie. Heading to a festival? Try wearing it as a headband or bandana. The best bit: it'll keep your scalp protected from the sun, whilst also looking extremely chic.
Styling cashmere scarves for warmth and style
A cashmere scarf is the perfect choice for colder days, thanks to the fine, soft fibres that create natural insulation. It’s a luxurious addition to your wardrobe and an investment that you can reap the rewards of year after year if looked after properly. We’re currently loving Hush’s triangle scarf in magenta. Style yours with the coordinating jumper or make the colour pop by teaming it with neutral knitwear.
If you're looking for an less pricey cashmere alternative that's just as cosy, opt for a chunky, large scarf instead. We love this blue argyle option for bringing a splash of character and warmth.
Creating complete scarves outfits
You can’t deny that a stylish scarf complements everyday staples, from a jacket over jeans and a jumper, to a trench with smart workwear. But did you ever about adding a silky scarf to elevate an evening look? We love this slender polka-dot iteration paired with a striking black dress. Just place it across your neck and let both ends hang over your shoulders and down your back.
Or, if you’re heading to a wedding or black-tie event and you need an extra layer that’s not a jacket, wrap a luxurious pashmina-style scarf over your shoulders for an elegant finish. We’re currently coveting this one from Phase Eight available in pastel pink or deep navy blue.
