Though a classic since the 1950s, loafers are firmly back in the style spotlight, fuelled by the preppy trend revival and their ability to modernise any look.

It's surprisingly easy to style penny loafers – they go with pretty much anything. While a natural fit with smart trousers and shirts for the office, their subtle androgyny creates a contrast with softer, traditionally feminine pieces. Try them with a floaty dress for a contemporary edge or an A-line mini skirt for a touch of retro cool.

When it comes to how to wear chunky loafers, it's all about playing with their shape to create balanced outfits. Step away from skinny jeans and instead explore more voluminous silhouettes like horseshoe or barrel leg cuts. Flatform loafers also look great with longer Bermuda-style shorts or cropped wide-leg trousers. Try metallic loafers for a futuristic feel.

An easy styling trick is to coordinate your socks with a colour from your outfit. For instance, red socks would beautifully complement a red striped top when worn with simple black loafers.
