These "mushrooms" look great and the description sounds interesting so I bought them for the family as a snack. They don't live up to either their looks or their description. Very bland indeed.

Vietnamese Mushroom Steamed Buns

I returned these to my local Marks & Spencer in the hope that the member of staff would pass my feedback up the line to Management. She stated that they are a Vietnamese speciality. I have just returned from touring Vietnam and never ate anything as tasteless as this whilst I was there. My husband and I both bit into one each, and we both agreed that it was probably like biting into plastic/polystyrene. Not recommended, and not a good representation of Vietnamese food.

Microwaved as instructed, with no alternative method, the cling film shrink wraps the buns during the rest period leaving them flat and hard. Unappetising and completely unlike the packaging picture. Misleading.

Looked lovely, easy to prepare. First mouthful when hot was promising and the filling was tasty but lots of bun and not enough filling. As they cooled they became soggy & less appealing. They were the only canapés left on the platter by friends who usually consume everything on offer.

I am a vegetarian and enjoy dishes that maintain the integrity of their ingredients. These did not disappoint. No unnecessary addition of chilli which appears to feature heavily in veggie dishes these days (and I’m not a fan.) Mushroom through and through with a delectable sauce, enveloped in a soft mushroom shaped bun. My teenage son is a carnivore and loved them also. I’m heading back to buy more, hope the range evolves with more vegetarian options and remains in the main stock going forward. Congratulations M&S - they are a hit!!
