I decided to celebrate my husband’s birthday slightly differently than normal. I got some rice paper toppers celebrating retro toys from the 70’s and decided upon the Black Forest Gateau, in keeping with the retro vibe. Gorgeous cake! The cream was sumptuously fresh, the kirsch cherry sandwich filling and decoration cherries were just right (not too sharp, not artificially sweet), the chocolate moist soft sponge had the right amount of cocoa/chocolate. From the first bite to the last, it was gorgeously decadent and nostalgically familiar. Thank M&S for contributing to a really special day for my husband. It wasn’t any old Black Forest Gateau; it was M&S Black Forest Gateau! Thank you again!

One of the best cakes I have bought from M&S. It was moist and soft, certainly proved it was freshly baked 10/10. Unlike some of the hopeless cakes I have tried at M&S Cafe, never fresh, not certain for how long they sit behind the counter .

This is a very good gateau. It is light sponge, with plenty of chocolate swirls and the right amount of cream (not over board) and the black cherry filling is fresh and not artificial tasting at all. It would be an excellent choice for a special afternoon tea or a dessert served with ice cream. I didn't get 10 servings as everyone wanted a 'decent' slice so I would say more like 6 generous servings!

We bought this as a birthday cake for a small family celebration but were very disappointed by the lack of taste-the cake was moist but couldn’t taste any kirsch and it didn’t have a strong chocolate flavour either. It was beautifully decorated but the cream had a strong ,slightly sour taste to it-two days before the use by date. We ended up throwing about a third of the cake in the bin .

Couldn’t taste the kirsch at all and the chocolate sponges needed more cocoa solids. The filling, cream and Belgian chocolate topping were brilliant and overall good value for money. So it’s possible for M&S suppliers to improve this cake even if it might cost a bit more.

[Employee of marksandspencer-en_gb] This is the 2nd time I’ve purchased this product. “Fabulous”. This is Black Forest Gateau at its best. To improve I would like to see it pre sliced to make it easier to serve as it can be quite messy when cutting. I would also like to see it being a product that could be frozen so that you don’t have to discard what doesn’t get eaten on the evening
