Sizing is bonkers

I bought 6-7 years for my normal sized nearly 6 year old and they were swinging on him, just fell off, not even a belt could have saved them. I have since bought the 4-5 years and they are still too loose but they just about stay on. I'll need a belt. Find M&S sizing really inconsistent.
