THE BEST SULPHATE-FREE SHAMPOOS

Everyone’s talking about the benefits of sulphate-free shampoo. Guest beauty editor Donna Francis puts three of the best to the test

Since having kids my hair changed. A lot. Once smooth and manageable, it turned frizzy, dry and out of control. Research has shown that sulphates found in some shampoos can strip the hair and scalp of essential oils, plus it can dull coloured, treated hair. Switching to a chemical-free shampoo seemed like the simplest solution. But I was sceptical. Can gentler ingredients really make my hair frizz-free, shiny and controllable again? First, I tried Living Proof Full Shampoo. OK, it didn’t foam up, but no bubbles didn’t mean it felt less clean and the softer texture felt moisturising rather than stripping. I needed a second shampoo with Aveda’s Scalp Benefits Balancing Shampoo as it felt so weightless, like it wasn’t cleaning my hair, but the post blow-dry smoothness made up for that. My favourite was Percy & Reed Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Wash Shampoo, which felt just as creamy and rich as a sulphate formula but left my hair feeling squeaky clean and looking smooth. Three shampoos later and my hair is manageable again. Result!
