Banish winter stuffiness and make a fresh start with these easy ideas for giving your home – and your mood – a new-season boost with scent
Choose your favourite from our reed diffusers, scented candles, room sprays and more.
Whether you’re entertaining or just relaxing, the way your home smells can have a big impact on how you feel. Follow these simple steps to bring a breath of fresh air to your interiors, fast.
1 Fling open your doors and windows. It might sound obvious, but it’s the quickest, most effective way to waft away last-season stuffiness and fill your home with fresh, clean air (and best of all it’s free). Open all your doors and windows at once for as long as you can so the air circulates to maximum effect.
2 Wash or air out any fabrics that might have absorbed cooking smells over the winter months. If you can, have your curtains, upholstery and carpets or rugs steam cleaned, or at least freshen them up by opening nearby windows for a while. Give your kitchen sink a deep clean, and if you have a food disposal unit, run lemon rinds and ice cubes through it to get rid of any lingering smells.
3 Light a scented candle for a big, instant hit of fragrance. Citrus scents are great for neutralising cooking odours in the kitchen, or go with fresh or fruity home fragrance to give any room a lift.
4 Reed diffusers are perfect for long-lasting fragrance that adds subtle ambience. Choose a scent that matches the mood you want in each room – for instance, try relaxing notes of lavender in the bedroom to help you drift off. Reed diffuser multipacks are great for trying out different scents in each part of the house. Turn the reeds when the fragrance starts to fade or if you want a quick boost.
5 Home fragrance doesn’t always have to be on display. Place unlit scented candles or pot pourri inside your wardrobe so you get a nice surprise every time you open it. Your clothes will absorb some of the scent, too, so you can keep that feelgood feeling with you all day long.
