Here are a few of the main exclusions on our pet insurances:- Treatment for any pre-existing conditions
- Treatment for poisoning or any accidental injury that occurs in the first 3 days of your policy*
- Treatment for any illness that occurs in the first 14 days of your policy*
- Treatment related to vaccine-preventable conditions
- Treatment related to breeding, pregnancy or birthing
- Treatment on baby teeth if your pet is over 16 weeks when your policy starts
*Switching to M&S Pet Insurance? If you can prove your previous insurance runs up to the policy start date, we can waive this for you.

Do you cover pre-existing conditions?
Any conditions, symptoms, illnesses or injuries your pet is suffering or has suffered from in the past will not be covered under the policy. This includes one-off or ongoing symptoms and conditions, and accidental injuries, even if your pet didn't receive treatment or you were told it was nothing to worry about. We also consider pre-existing conditions to cover discussions about your pet with your vet or other professionals regarding their health or behaviour.Failure to inform us about any pre-existing conditions your pet is suffering from or has suffered from in the past may affect future claims and your policy.
Will I have to pay excess?
You'll need to pay an excess when you claim vet fees, and the frequency and amount you'll need to pay will depend on your policy:- For Lifetime policies, your excess is payable per condition, per year
- For Maximum Benefit and Time Limited policies, your excess is payable per condition
The amount you will need to pay will depend on the excess options you choose when you buy your policy. Your excess will be either:
- The set excess on your policy
- The set excess on your policy or a percentage of your claim amount, whichever is more
- The set excess plus percentage excess
You'll find your excess on your Certificate of Insurance and in the Pet Portal
Your excess will change as your pet gets older
When your pet reaches a specific age, their excess will change.

When will my cover start?
Your pet insurance policy will commence on the date selected when taking out the policy. However, you will not be able to make a claim immediately.After 3 days your pet is covered for accidents
Incidents of poisoning and accidents that happen in the first 3 days of your policy are considered a pre-existing condition and will not be covered.
After 14 days you are covered for illnesses
Illnesses that your pet suffers from in the first 14 days of your policy are are considered a pre-existing condition and will not be covered.
14-day claim restrictions are also in place for M&S's policy features and benefits, including but not limited to Finding your Pet, Death from Accident or Illness, Holiday Cancellation etc.
Switching from another provider
If you switch to M&S from another provider, and can prove your previous policy ran up to your new policy, your coverage with M&S pet insurance will begin immediately.

Pet age limits
New M&S Pet Insurance policies can be taken out from your pet turning 8 weeks old. There is no upper limit.Dogs we don't cover
We do not provide our Lifetime cover for the following breeds and crossbreeds:Anatolian Shepherd Dog, Beauceron, Bernese Mountain Dog, Bernese Sennenhund, Bulldog, Bullmastiff, Canadian Eskimo Dog, Coonhound, Danish Pointer, Deerhound, Dogue de Bordeaux, Estrela Mountain Dog, Giant Schnauzer, Greenland Dog, Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, Leonberger, Magyar Agar, Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, Newfoundland, Northern Inuit/Eskimo Dog, Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Old English Bulldog, Old English Sheepdog, Poodle (Standard), Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler, Shar Pei, St Bernard, Tibetan Mastiff, Utonagan.
We do not provide cover for any dog that must be registered under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 and/or the Dogs (Muzzling) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1991, or any American Bulldog, American Indian Dog, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bully, Bandog, Boerboel, Bully Kutta, Canary Dog, Cane Corso, Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, Dingo, Dogo Argentino, Dogue Brasileiro, Fila Brasileiro, Gull Dong, Husky Wolf Hybrid, Irish Staffordshire Blue Bull Terrier, Irish Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Pit Bull Terrier, Saarlooswolfhound, Tosa, Tosa Inu, Wolf Hybrid, Wolfdog, XL Bully, or any dog crossbred with any of these breeds.
We do not provide cover for working dogs, i.e. gun dogs, farm dogs, racing dogs, emergency services dogs, guard dogs or security dogs.
Dogs we don't cover for Third Party Liability
We do not provide third party liability cover for the following breeds and crossbreeds:Akita, Cirneco dell'Etna, Dogue de Bordeaux, Japanese Akitas, Korean Jindo, Mexican Hairless, Neapolitan Mastiffs, Northern Inuit/Eskimo Dog, Portuguese Podengo, Seguguio Italiano, Shar Pei and Utonagan.

No. Routine or elective treatments such as neutering, annual check-ups and vaccinations aren't covered on your M&S Pet Insurance.Be aware, conditions your pet develops as a result of the neutering procedure may not be covered by your policy.
Does pet insurance work for travel abroad?
Our cover comes with overseas vet fee protection included. We may be able to help towards the cost of vet treatment for accidents and injuries anywhere in the EU up to your vet fee limit for 90 days per yearHowever, we won't be able to provide overseas vet fee cover for:
- Treatment of pre-existing medical conditions that were known before travel
- Treatment of accidental injuries occurring in the first 3 days and illnesses occurring in the first 14 days of the policy*
- Treatment that cannot be verified by a receipt
- Any treatment by vet practices that we don't have an address and contact details for
- Claims on pets that have spent longer than 90 days abroad within 12 months
- Treatment for accidents or injuries outside of the EU
- Cost of replacement travel documents if yours are destroyed, lost or stolen
- Quarantine costs
- Claims for treatment on pets who haven't followed established travel guidelines laid out by the UK government, local authorities or FCDO guidelines
*We may be able to waive these exclusions if you switched to M&S Pet Insurance and can provide proof that your previous policy was in place for more than 14 days with no gaps in cover.
Does pet insurance cover vaccinations?
Vaccinations aren't covered on your pet insurance because these are routine treatments.We're unable to cover the cost of treatments for illnesses or conditions if you fail to vaccinate your pet as recommended by your vet. Conditions that could've been prevented by vaccinations are not covered.
Can I get pet insurance for pre existing conditions?
No. Pre-existing conditions aren't covered. These include illnesses, injuries or symptoms that you or your vet may be aware of before taking out your policy.What is Lifetime pet insurance?
Lifetime pet insurance is the most long-term cover you can choose for your cat or dog— lifetime cover continues to pay for treatment of illnesses and injuries for as long as you renew your policy. That means if your pet develops a chronic condition, you won't suddenly lose cover when they need it most.What is Time Limited pet insurance?
Time-limited pet insurance is one of the more affordable options available, offering valuable short-term cover for your pet's illnesses or injuries. Each condition is covered for up to 12 months from the date it's first diagnosed, or until you reach the policy's financial limit—whichever comes first. A good choice for older pets or for owners looking for a budget-friendly way to protect against unexpected vet bills.
