Top tips for cooking with kids
There are so many benefits to getting children to help in the kitchen. Exposing them to a range of foods may help with fussy eating, while cooking can help them develop vital life skills.
Involve them in the whole process
Cooking with kids doesn’t just start in the kitchen. Point out different foods in the shop, let them help unpack, or flick through recipe books to help involve them in choosing what to cook. You could try writing a family meal plan of recipes you’re all going to eat that week.
Give them little jobs
Depending on your child’s age, that might be helping with mixing, measuring, stirring or chopping. Smaller babies and toddlers will love to touch and smell the food – the zest of a lemon or some fresh mint are all nice scents to try.
Embrace the mess
It’s an inevitable part of the process, so lean into it. Let kids touch and explore the food, and let go of any sense of perfectionism. Who cares if your homemade biscuits don’t look like the ones on Instagram? You’ve made loads of lovely memories together. And you can always clean up afterwards!
