Given we seem to naturally layer our little children's clothing: bodysuit, top, jumper/sweat shirt they don’t really need a thick coat over the top in case they over heat. Given London doesn’t really experience arctic weather this coat fits the bill without the need of a thick jumper/sweat top underneath. If you prefer that extra layer I would suggest going up a bigger size as it’s quite a snug fit.
