The best wine pairings for Christmas
Head of beers, wines and spirits
Caroline Thompson-Hill
Whether it’s crisp and delicate whites to go with your seafood starter, or full-bodied French reds that pair perfectly with meaty mains, we’ve got you covered with our extensive range of great-value wines. One of my favourite parts of my role as head of beers, wines and spirits is seeing our expert in-house winemakers work with some of the world’s best wineries to bring you top-quality, award-winning bottles that you won’t find anywhere else.

The best red wine for Christmas dinner
Looking for a cracking red to serve alongside your turkey? This fruity Classics Côtes du Rhône Villages is a smooth, versatile, well-structured red with red cherry and spice notes. It’ll sing when paired with your Christmas lunch, from turkey to red meat.

The best white wine for Christmas dinner
If you’re going white, the delicate flavours of your turkey call for our Collection Gavi del Comune di Gavi – an elegant, well-balanced, unoaked Italian, made from vines with an average age of 35. Expect a complex wine with citrus and stone fruit flavours.
If you've got alcohol-free guests, our 0.5% Divin Sauvignon Blanc is an unbeatable low-alcohol option.

The best sparkling wine for Christmas parties
Searching for a party-starting fizz? I'll be opening a bottle of our Rockferne Sparkling Wine – produced in Sussex, this exclusive British fizz is bursting with baked apple and ripe peach flavours, making it divine with nibbles, like these dressed smoked salmon vol au vents.
For New Year's Eve, our exceptional Delacourt Brut Champagne has fine, creamy bubbles – a real treat for special occasions (it'll make a dream gift, too).

The best-value wine for Christmas parties
Hosting a festive get-together? Then an ice bucket full of our Classics No.12 Crémant de Bourgogne is a must. Made in the same way as top-end Champagne but a fraction of the price, it has soft, creamy bubbles and fabulous flavours of peach blossom, apricot and redcurrant. Great on its own or served with nibbles – it’s one of my favourites in our range.

The best mulled wine for Christmas
It wouldn't be Christmas without a steaming cup of mulled wine, heady with the aroma of Christmassy spices. Judging by the love for last year's White Mulled Wine, we're excited to launch our first-on-the-high-street Rosé Mulled Wine, and our Maple Mulled Wine, with a hint of sweet Canadian maple syrup and a hit of brandy. All available in store from 8 October.
Want to make it yourself? Pick up a pack of our Mulling Spices and heat through with red or white wine, or check out our mulled wine recipe below.

The best wine for Christmas picky bits
This fresh and zesty Classics Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is made for picky bits season. Crafted with an intense blend of citrus, tropical fruit, and guava flavours, it's a bright, easy-drinking wine that'll go down well with a crowd.

The best wine for Christmas seafood
We’ve got some fantastic seafood this year and I’ll be serving mine with a bottle of Provence rosé. Our La Balconne Organic Provence Rosé is filled with notes of white peach, strawberry and wild herbs – it's a complex wine that is wonderful with fresh seafood starters (it's great as an aperetif, too).
Our Coteaux Varois en Provence is a dry, distinctly fruity rosé, which will pair fantastically well with seafood nibbles.

The best wine pairing with beef
If you’re serving exceptional beef over Christmas, an elegant red such as our Collection Moueix Saint Emilion is the pairing to choose. Sourced from the prestigious Saint-Émilion region in Bordeaux, this refined red is made exclusively for us by the highly acclaimed Moueix family. Think plump plums and spiced red fruit flavours that come to life when served with beef, lamb or indeed strong cheese.

The best wine for Boxing Day
Whether you’re tucking into a ham or leftovers, our Classics No.38 New Zealand Pinot Noir is ideal for Boxing Day. This soft, medium-bodied red – made with grapes from the prestigious Marlborough region on New Zealand’s South Island – has hints of cherries and cranberries, making it super versatile.

The best wine for your Christmas cheese board
I love a Christmas cheese board and always serve mine with our Collection Late Bottled Vintage Port. After up to six years of ageing in large wooden casks, it develops rich flavours of blackberry, spice and dark chocolate. A treat to enjoy over the season, it also works brilliantly with rich, chocolatey desserts.

The best wine to pair with Christmas desserts
With your roulades, trifles and every dessert in between, our Champagne Delacourt Rosé Medium Dry is the perfect way to end any festive meal. This premium pink fizz is made by acclaimed cellar master Carine Bailleul and has flavours of pomegranate, red cherry, caramel and brioche.

The best bottle to bring as a gift
A bottle of Champagne is the ideal way to bring a touch of festive sparkle and I find it’s the perfect present for anyone who’s tricky to buy for! With refreshing flavours of peach, vanilla and brioche, our popular Champagne Delacourt Brut is exclusive to M&S and available in a gorgeous gift box.
