M&S Found Mazuelo

The forgotten grape of Rioja creates rich wines bursting with red fruit and wild herbs.

About this bottle: The Mazuelo variety has been grown in La Rioja for several hundred years but today makes up just 3% of the vineyard area, a rare gem. It is also known as Carigñena in other regions in Spain, and Carignan Noir in the rest of the world, given its French origin. Rioja's Mazuelo produces wines with great structure, freshness and deep colour, creating wines that can age for a long time. With uplifting flavours of black and red fruits and a touch of spice, this red is a delight with Manchego cheese, 'Escalivada' smoky grilled vegetables or the typical local dish of spiced pork roast with potatoes.

Vintage: 2021

Cappuccio, meaning hood, describes the clock of vine leaves which protect the grapes from the hot Sicilian sun.

About this bottle: Clinging to the steep volcanic slopes of Sicily’s majestic Mount Etna (mountain) the shy Nerello Cappuccio grapes shelter under their vines “hooded” or “Cappuccio” leafy canopy. Normally playing a supporting role in Sicily’s red wines, this rare single varietal wine made by Domenico De Gregorio of Settesoli reflects Nerello Cappuccio assets, deeply coloured and fruity but without harsh tannins, making it a versatile wine to sip or pair with foods. An ancient grape from Fruili Venezia Giulia- a beautiful region in the foothills of the Dolomites.

About this bottle: Ribolla Gialla is an ancient variety found in the north east of Italy, where the Bora wind from the Dolomites helps retain freshness in this bright yellow "gialla" covered grape. Domus Vini have championed this rare indigenous gem and winemaker Giacomo Vedovato who crafts this blend exclusively for M&S, recommends trying it with local capesante gratinate, scallop gratin. A much loved Portuguese white - Vinho Verde- has been transformed with a vibrant, pink twist.

About this bottle: A rare spritzy Rosé made by family winery Quinta das Arcas using local Espadeiro and Touriga Nacional grapes. Winemakers Fernando Machado and Henrique Lopes recommend trying it with seafood paella.

It is claimed that monks from Saint-Hilaire Monastery in Limoux produced the first sparkling wine in 1531.

About this bottle: Less well known than its famous relatives, this ancient white variety, Pinot Blanc or Weissburgunder, nevertheless produces stunning wines. It is a rare, but versatile grape, even in its native home in Germany, matching with many foods. Winemaker Gerd Stepp, who produces this example exclusively for MandS, recommends drinking it with pan seared river trout and white asparagus. Best enjoyed chilled within 2 years of purchase.
