This case includes

Friuli DOC Grave Merlot

Vintage: 2014

A ripe, intensely fruity Italian Merlot with an enticing aroma and flavour of juicy cherries and plums with a soft but lingering finish.

About this bottle: The grapes for this wine are 100% Merlot, grown in Italy's relatively cool climate region of Fruili. The vineyards lie between an arch of mountains to the north and the Adriatic sea to the south, which provides a perfect, protected site for ripening fruit. Winemaker Arrigo Bidoli matured this wine for 10 months predominantly in French oak barrels, which adds complexity and smoothness to the wine. To retain flavour and complexity this wine has only been lightly filtered during production. This may result in a small harmless sediment forming over time in the bottom of the bottle.

About this bottle: This delicate but complex white was made by M&S winemaker Jeneve Williams and local expert Luciano Piona using Pinot Grigio grapes grown around Lake Garda in northern Italy. The mild and temperate climate here allows the grapes to ripen gently and attain an excellent balance of sweetness, acidity and minerality, which the winemakers have expressed perfectly in this wine.

Packed with dense, rich fruit and notes of mint and cream, this is a seductive Chilean Shiraz with bags of character. Though ripe, the fruit isn’t overly sweet on the palate; instead the full body is complemented by a fine texture and an elegantly peppery finish.

About this bottle: This characterful red was made by the experienced winemaking team of Eduardo Gajardo and David Gonzalez at Viña Santa Alicia in Chile’s renowned Maipo Valley. Wakefield Riesling

Vintage: 2012

Dry Riesling with mineral aromas, and classic notes of honey, bitter orange and grapefruit. Richer stone fruit characters develop on the palate and a soft, green-apple acidity keeps this wine dancing on the tongue from start to finish.

About this bottle: Clare Valley Riesling is one of Australia's best kept white wine secrets - no other New World region can capture the fragrance and delicacy of this grape, while adding in plenty of the warm sunny fruitiness natural to a hot climate country. Winemaker Adam Eggins harvests this example from gnarly old Riesling vines, some of which are as mature as 40 years old, and give the wine an even deeper intensity.

Smooth, harmonious red with cherry and blackberry flavours, velvety tannins, and a wonderful balance between tangy dried red fruits and nutty richness. Fabulously long lasting on the finish.

About this bottle: The tangy blend of grapes in this red mirrors the complexities of the vineyards on which it was grown. Noricum has been inhabited by Celtic tribes, Austrians, Germans and Slovenians and is heavily influenced by the Alps too. Winemaker Anselmo Martini harnesses the bold flavours of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and pairs them with local varieties Teroldego and Lagrein – allowing the subtleties of each grape to shine through.

Zevenwacht 7even Sauvignon Blanc

Vintage: 2014

Fine flavours of warm lemons and spiced apples greet the palate while an invigorating burst of fresh lime and lemon meets the nose. An added zing of new-cut grass and pure green apples make this white ultra-appetising and eminently sippable.

About this bottle: Zevenwacht translates as ‘seven expectations’. One of those, according to winemaker Jacques Viljoen, is to ensure the natural flora and fauna of the Stellenbosch hills is around for future generations, so 15% of this farm is listed as a protected conservation area. Jacques has high expectations of this Sauvignon too: he blends it with 15% Chenin Blanc for extra complexity and a dash of chutzpah, and its zesty fruitiness is kept all the zingier by the fresh coastal breezes which sweep in from False Bay.

Mixed blessings...

Yes, I recommend this

That I have usually found to be the case with mixed cases of wines. But this was just stonking good value. I did not know that Chilean carmenere had such depth and I loved the riesling from the Clare Valley and the delicious and fragrant white from Anjou. There was not a bad bottle in this terrific selection that did not travel too familiar paths but introduced me to grapes and styles of wine I would not normally have tried, along with a few old favourites. I think you wine team deserves great praise. Cheers!
