fantastic dress -why the inconsistent length?

Wonderful dress! - skims, elegant, modern, cool for summer, slightly larger sizing. Have ordered a second - see below. Also very easy care - sometimes needs ironing over the bust however. Have managed to steam in shower room while travelling Why however is the sizing etc so variable? Three inch length difference between colours ordered in the same size? Will need to have this altered - shame as the first dress was perfect.
