How to choose the perfect celebration cake

M&S FoodHave your cake
Nothing says celebration quite like an M&S cake. As the home of Colin the Caterpillar, we know a thing or two about creating quality cakes (and memories!). We’ve pulled out all the stops with our brand-new Collection range of outstanding celebration cakes. Comprising decadent layers of sponge filled with all-butter buttercream and made with only the finest ingredients, from Sicilian lemons to Madagascan chocolate, they’re guaranteed to get the party started… Keep reading to discover the range and find a cake that’s fit for your next special gathering. Plus, our expert tips on cutting, serving and storing your cake.
The seriously chocolatey one
Rich and decadent, our Collection Madagascan Chocolate and Hazelnut Cake is one for chocoholics and is a great option for birthdays. It features three layers of moist dark chocolate and hazelnut sponge, filled with Madagascan dark chocolate and hazelnut cream, and is hand-finished with praline hazelnuts and ribbon piping.
Curious about how best to cut your cake? While you may be tempted to cut your cake like a cheesecake into equal-sized triangle slices, to feed a crowd, experts recommend removing a slice a few inches in from each end of the cake, then cutting the cake into rectangular slices and then squares.
The fun and fruity one
Our wonderfully fruity and nutty Collection Pistachio and Raspberry Cake comprises two layers of fluffy raspberry sponge cake layered with a raspberry syrup-infused pistachio frangipane, pistachio buttercream and raspberry jam. It’s hand-finished with pistachio buttercream, pistachio nuts and freeze-dried raspberry pieces for a final flourish.
Looking to personalise your cake? We have a gorgeous range of candles and cake toppers in the Foodhall – opt for our tall, thin gold cake candles for an Instagram-worthy effect, or add some M&S Edible Viola flowers for an extra-special flourish.
The zesty one
For a sweet-but-sharp treat, look no further than our Collection Sicilian Lemon and Blackcurrant Cake. Three rich and creamy layers of Madagascan vanilla sponge are enriched with buttermilk and soaked in Sicilian lemon juice. The cake’s then filled with blackcurrant jam, Sicilian lemon juice and lemon curd buttercream. Hand-decorated with the same zesty buttercream and edible blue cornflowers, it's truly eye-catching.
One of the best ways to store your celebratory centrepieces (that’s if there is any left!) is to use a cake storage tin or container, but you’ll want to make sure there aren’t any gaps or holes in your chosen vessel as air can affect the cake’s consistency. Slide the cake in carefully, using the lid as a base, so it doesn’t get damaged. You can also freeze slices of cake, wrapped tightly in cling film.
