Everyone looks better in a suit, but picking one can be tricky. Get it right with our in-depth guide to the key fits, fabrics and finer details to look for
The foundation of any good suit is what it’s made from. Woollen fabrics are a classic choice and come in a whole host of different weights, from the ultra-fine, such as the beautiful grey pinstripe left, to the more textured brushed Donegal three-piece right. Plump for wool and you won’t go wrong. Wool makes up the majority of this modern peak lapel suit (), but it has added Lycra to allow you to move with ease. The multi-tonal fabric of this suit has an almost iridescent sheen.
From the generous regular to the sleek super slim, suits come in all shapes and sizes. A well-tailored suit sets you apart, so finding the perfect fit is essential. We recommend you avoid going too loose – the tailored-fit suit right has the perfect mix of a neat shape and room to move. Sharper still is the slim-fit suit left – this silhouette is at once contemporary, timeless and right on the money for the office. Our modern slim style () comes in a fetching brown. It’s a closer cut than our slim but, don’t be scared; get the size right and you’ll make a statement for all the right reasons.
While getting the fabric and fit right is paramount, it’s the little details that take your tailoring to the next level. At every price point, the amount of work that goes into each of our suits is hard to beat – most obvious are the beautiful stitching and fine buttons we’ve used on this classic double-breasted waistcoat ( left), which ramps up the formality. But more subtle touches are equally important. From the array of perfectly finished internal pockets ( right) to the premium, printed facings found on the underside of jacket collars () that handily show you the colours to combine with your suit, you’ll know your outfit has been designed with care.
