Shimmer and shine

“A statement necklace can instantly update any holiday look. Try blending your metallics with a gold necklace and silver top for a mega style moment.”

As the lights go up in cities around the country and stores are filled with Christmas decorations, I can feel the excitement of the party season ahead. The days of mulled wine, roasting chestnuts and twinkling trees are upon us and that means my festive wardrobe needs attention.

The thought of dressing for multiple parties can strike fear in the hearts of many. For me, I look at the season as an opportunity to combine my favourite pieces from years past with current trends. This can be as simple as accessorising with a new printed scarf or bold earrings or mixing in a statement velvet suit with a timely touch of glitz and glamour. I almost see it as a game – an exercise in mixing and matching to maximise my wardrobe.

For 2016, all partywear signs point towards texture. Pull on the sequins, layer up the cashmere and go all-out with your metallics. This is the holiday season, so go bold or go home. But never forget that confidence is everything in creating

a look, so make sure you love what you’re rocking around that Christmas tree.

Try pairing a sequin dress with a heavy-knit cardigan to play ritzy against comfy, which always results in a chic winter ensemble. Team a formal dress with biker boots for a rock’n’roll spin or even combine sleek black pants with bold high heels to let your feet do all the talking.

The combinations are endless and long gone are the days of only being able to wear something once, in only one way. Have fun with your look and experiment with a medley of your favourite prints, textures and shapes. Let the party preparations commence!

Emily’s party-starting favourites

Hoop earrings are perfect paired with a chunky turtleneck or a high-necked coat. Sweep your hair up to really show them off.
Coordinates are the way forward. Teamed with other separates, they’ll provide the foundation for dozens of different outfits.
I’ll throw on as much texture as I can carry. This faux-fur stole and sequin dress combo is a great example of contrasting textures working together.
I love these heels. Bought for the holiday season, I’ll be wearing them again and again, straight through to Valentine’s Day.
Think outside the jewellery box. These statement earrings are one set, with two different styles – it’s an unexpected twist.
Velvet was perhaps the hottest trend on the catwalk this season. This suit, worn oversized for a more casual look, is my party must-have.
