How to plan your Christmas food shop

The planning starts here!
Grab a coffee, warm up a mince pie, and make a list of all the main eating occasions around Christmas week – from the day itself to the guests you might have for Boxing Day, plus what you’ll eat on Christmas Eve, and the extra bits you’ll need for those cosy ‘Betwixtmas’ meals. Check out our Christmas recipe collection for lots of inspiration, and jot down the ingredients you’ll need. Then browse our digital food catalogue to see our entire range in store. You can check what's in stock at your nearest store, search for specific products, browse Christmas food, and create your own shopping list.

Now: Stock your cupboards
Don’t leave everything to the last minute. Two to three weeks before the big day, stock up on store cupboard treats which will make the big shop a little easier. Think festive drinks – the usual wine, beer and fizz, as well as some special festive additions like our Mince Pie Liqueur and Marksologist pre-mixed cocktails. Buy your Christmas pudding, Christmas cake and mince pies, and stock your storecupboard with festive flavour boosters like our Roast Potato Seasoning which will make cooking easier. Now’s also a good time to make a batch of mince pies to stash in the freezer, as well as frozen festive food to help you get ahead.

From 11 December: Choose your Christmas cheese
All our fabulous festive cheeses are in store now, so plan your perfect cheeseboard and stock the fridge. Don’t miss our oozy baking burrata with an ‘nduja ciabatta crumb, which would taste amazing as part of a levelled-up Christmas Eve picky tea. For the big day, build your board with big hitters like our 5-year-old Cornish Cruncher, Hot Honey Brie Brulée, award-winning stilton and Somerset Brie. Don’t forget to pick up all the accompaniments, too – crackers, festive-spiced chutney, quince paste and fruits steeped in kirsch.

From 18 December: Bag a dazzling dessert
Our fresh desserts will land in store today, in date for your Christmas-day feast. Whether you’re serving up a beautiful Collection Chocolate and Hazelnut Buche, Our Best Ever Yule Log – a chocolate sponge filled with Madagascan vanilla whipped cream and rich chocolate ganache – or an elegant Raspberry and Vanilla Panna Cotta, this year’s puddings are worthy of a top French patisserie. You’ll also find magical Christmas cakes in store today, like our almost-too-cute-to-slice speculoos and white chocolate Christmas Cabin Cake and, of course, our iconic Christmas Colin, who’s made with 30% more chocolate than the original this year.

From 20 December: Shop seasonal vegetables
The big day’s almost here – now’s the time to shop for all your fresh veggies. Check out our festive Fresh Market Specials for great prices on British, expertly sourced carrots, sprouts, parsnips and potatoes, all from trusted M&S Select Farms for the best quality. Add red cabbage – ready to be simmered with apple and cranberry – some fennel for punchy salads, leeks, onions and garlic for stuffing, pomegranate to bring a final festive flourish to winter salads and easy peelers (look out for our special easy peelers with leaves) to fill the fruit bowl.

From 20 December: choose your turkey
Our fresh turkeys are all in store this week, with the full range available from 20 December. So whether you’re hosting an early Christmas get-together or planning ahead for Christmas day, you can pick up a deliciously succulent bird. All our turkeys are sourced from trusted M&S Select Farms, who rear the birds slowly to allow them to develop a fuller flavour. Want to go fuss-free? Choose an option where we’ve done the hard work, like Our Best Ever Slow Cooked Turkey, brined with buttermilk, topped with a rich chestnut and pork stuffing and finished with oak and applewood smoked bacon – it’s 100% foolproof and guaranteed to stay perfectly tender. While you’re at it, don’t forget some double-wrapped Pigs in Blankets to accompany your bird – this year, we’ve wrapped them all in a whole rasher of outdoor-bred streaky bacon, so they’re guaranteed to stay cosy.

From 22 December: Don’t forget fresh seafood
Our responsibly sourced, restaurant-quality seafood will be available today and in date for Christmas. Think Scottish salmon, expertly smoked by our master smoker, ready to be loaded up into vol au vents or served with scrambled eggs for breakfast. You’ll find elegant starters, too – from shell-in scallops with pea and pancetta to our Collection Seafood Rockpool, with easy-peel Vietnamese prawns, Vietnamese prawns, Honduran king prawns and scallops topped with a rich, aromatic garlic and herb butter.

Christmas Eve: Pick up last-minute essentials
There’s always something you’ve forgotten, so in between peeling spuds and prepping tomorrow’s dinner, check your original list and pop out for those last-minute essentials. Maybe it’s some extra gravy granules or bread sauce, or some frozen croissants, top-quality Cornish Gold Butter, fresh fruit, smoked salmon and bagels for a special Christmas breakfast. Whatever you’re shopping for, you’lll get the very best quality at M&S.
