How to Wear Underwear as Outerwear

“I love the femininity of the lace and satin, paired with structured pieces like blazers and shirts to really make a statement: it’s undeniably chic. Beautiful underwear makes me feel confident in my skin, so why not show it off?” says style influencer, Shannon Grace Ella @shannongraceella.
Underwear-as-outerwear inspired picks
The underwear as outerwear trend
Once upon a time, underwear was something to hide. Think no-VPL knickers, strapless bras and nude colourways. But the tide has turned.
The roots of the underwear as outerwear trend begin in the '90s. Remember Madonna’s cone bra and Kate Moss’s barely-there silver slip dress? This trend is all about worn-to-be-seen lingerie.
Gen Z were next to embrace the underwear as outerwear trend, showcasing bold bras peeping out from beneath sheer tops, slinky slip dresses coupled with oversized jackets and corsets as outerwear.
If it has you intrigued, discover how style influencer, Shannon Grace Ella @shannongraceella, embraces the trend.
How to style a bralette
Shannon starts by pairing delicate lace pieces from our luxe Rosie collection with key summer pieces for an eye-catching contrast.
A bralette underneath an oversized shirt is a classic combination. The pure cotton shirt adds structure and coverage, while our Nolana bralette adds a feminine touch with detailed Chantilly lace. Team with the matching slip skirt in rich burgundy.
Finish the look with a pair of sleek kitten heels made with butter-soft suede and our woven hobo bag in a complimentary shade.
How to style a camisole
A lace camisole is a timeless lingerie-as-outerwear staple and Shannon's monochrome look helps to tie everything together seamlessly.
She pairs our silk cami, trimmed with touches of French lace, with a pair of flowy wide-leg satin trousers. The soft, silky fabrics are both on point and comfortable.
Shannon breaks up the all-black outfit with a few boho accents; tying a satin scarf around her waist and adding texture with a fringed clutch bag. To keep things elevated, finish the look with a pair of sleek sandals.
How to style a slip skirt
While you may have thought a slip only goes under dresses, Shannon is daringly wearing hers by itself.
Our ultra-feminine Nolana lace half slip contrasts beautifully with menswear-inspired pieces, pairing strong, clean lines with delicate lace. Layer over this ivory linen-rich blazer, that ties around the middle to cinch the waist and add definition.
Headed out for the evening? Hit the town in elegant stiletto heels and a lavish beaded bag to dial the look up a notch.
