How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

Dulcie EmersonCapsule wardrobe checklist
Start your capsule wardrobe by decluttering your existing clothes and accessories. Take time to prune out unworn items before investing wisely in the following pieces.
A striped cotton shirt
Stock up on longline shirts, which work from the office to the beach thanks to their multitasking potential. Wear tucked, unbuttoned, knotted at the waist or layered under a sweater.
Crew-neck T-shirts
Regular-fit T-shirts in neutral shades are the building blocks of your wardrobe, no matter the time of year. Choose tees made from pure cotton for natural softness and breathability.
A pair of classic jeans
A pair of straight-leg jeans in an authentic wash look just as good dressed up with heels as they do with trainers on run-around days. Choose a high or mid-rise waist for an ultra-flattering fit. The barrel leg or horseshoe shape is ideal for those who prefer a looser cut.
A day-to-night dress
Crafted from a comfortable knitted material, a slouchy jumper dress will take you from work to weekend with ease. Add statement jewellery and knee-high boots to take the look up a notch.
A timeless trench coat
Consider a lightweight trench coat, a trans-seasonal staple you’ll wear for years to come. Choose a belted jacket in a suits-all shade made from shower-proof fabric for maximum versatility.
A classic handbag
Carry your day-to-day essentials in style with a structured leather bag. Look out for styles with a long strap to go hands-free, as well as internal pockets to keep your valuables safe and organised.
A cashmere jumper
Keep cosy with a luxuriously soft cashmere jumper. Take your pick from versatile navy, grey or oatmeal, or embrace rainbow-bright colours to lift your mood during the winter months.
A Breton top
A striped top is always a good idea and this versatile nautical-inspired staple will more than earn its keep in your capsule wardrobe. Pair with everything from tailored trousers to denim midi skirts.
Comfy cuffed joggers
No longer just for sofa time, stylish loungewear is a key component of a modern capsule wardrobe. Our relaxed-fit joggers come in three lengths so you can pick the perfect look for you.
Simple white trainers
It goes without saying that minimal white trainers go with everything, but retro-cool colourful trainers have the potential to make your outfits pop. Insolia Flex technology in the insoles makes M&S trainers extra comfy, too.
A pair of chic ballet pumps
When the occasion calls for polish, two-tone ballet flats or Mary Janes do the trick. The bow detail and low heel are a winning combination for smart meeting through to social events.
A pair of timeless loafers
The classic loafer has moved firmly into the spotlight as a wardrobe essential over the past few seasons and can be worn with everything from jeans to dresses. We like ours paired with colourful statement-making ribbed socks.
