We speak to David Delport, skincare expert and global ambassador for REN Clean Skincare, about his top tips for men, from the best moisturisers to dealing with "maskne"
Switch to lightweight formulas in summer to help keep your skin feeling fresh
What should a basic skincare routine for men look like?
You need a protective day cream filled with antioxidants like vitamin C, a daily SPF with a minimum factor of 30, a cleanser to remove impurities, pollution and SPF, and a nourishing night cream. Look for products that do more than one thing to maximise benefit without filling up your bathroom shelf.
What are your tips for looking after your skin this summer?
Applying SPF is the most important thing you can do, otherwise you’ll spend all winter looking at marks and dull skin on your face. Also, switch your moisturiser to something that feels light on the skin, especially if you’re heading outdoors and are likely to perspire in the heat. I love a gel/cream texture and switch to REN's Glow Daily Vitamin C Gel Cream (find it in store) on warmer days.
How can men combat summer oiliness?
Avoid products with pore-blocking ingredients. I tend to not use skincare containing silicones for this reason. Get yourself a great gel cleanser with salicin (willow bark extract), which gives you a naturally deep-pore-cleansing wash without drying out your skin.
What about dealing with spots and “maskne”?
Try not to touch your face if you can help it and remember to switch out your mask regularly. I recommend a weekly purifying face mask to give your skin a deep clean and time to breathe. I love the REN Clearcalm Clarifying Clay Cleanser (find it in store), as it’s both a face wash and, if left on for 10 minutes before rinsing, a face mask. Do this once a week and it will really do the job of tackling breakouts while keeping skin smooth and less irritated.
