A Guide to Scandi-Style Outfits

Else HuttWhat is Scandi style?
Everyone knows that Scandinavians are undeniable cool. Spotted at Copenhagen fashion week both on and off the runway, the Scandis have in recent years become the poster girls for minimalism and (in contrast) a free, vibrant expressionism. Although this seems contradictory, both aesthetics rest on one common belief – good basics are the cornerstone to great style.
For example, tailored trousers create the perfect foundation for both a playful ruffled blouse, or a simple white camisole. Similarly, a neutral Harrington jacket can be paired with a tonal outfit, or if you're feeling daring, layered over an oversized striped shirt and jeans. It's all about those foundation pieces.
How to dress Scandi: the wardrobe essentials
Start with versatile wardrobe staples, like a reliable pair of jeans and a classic white T-shirt. Once you have these you can mix and match to create endless looks – the fun lies in playing with proportion, texture and accessories.
When it comes to denim, we love a straight-leg jean for a flattering silhouette that can then be built on. On chilly days, try throwing on a cosy knit in a neutral colour like cream, beige or black. Come spring reach for a structured top or shirt, like this pinstriped style in soft yellow. Bring extra definition to your look with a sleek, oversized blazer.
A good pair of boots is a must have. These suede kitten-heels will bring a chic finish to any outfit, plus they're perfect for going from the office to dinner.
Style outfits: the art of layering
The fun of Scandinavian fashion lies in the details, so those final touches matter just as much as the foundation. As we enter spring, it’s the perfect time to focus on layering. We're currently coveting this goes-with-everything leather bomber.
And if the winter chill is still refusing to go, slip on a cashmere cardigan underneath or drape it over your shoulders for an extra touch of warmth (and style). Our tip? Leave your jacket undone for a nonchalant look.
