MEN’S SUMMER OUTFIT IDEAS

Get inspired with the best style tips from influencers to stay in the know for men’s fair-weather fashion

Style tip: pick your palette

If you’re stuck in a rut wearing the same old colours – typically navy or black – then it can be hard to think outside the box. One easy way to subtly experiment with more colour is through dressing tonally, taking different shades from the same palette to create an outfit. That could mean, for example, twinning a chambray shirt with classic navy shorts, or layering a grey shirt over a black tee. We love the tonal palette adopted by Tom Sheard here, using an oatmeal-coloured shirt and taupe grey shorts for a fresh summer look.

Style tip: smarten up shorts

Gone are the days when men’s shorts were only worn for sport or going to the beach – now they’re even making appearances in some offices, at weddings, you name it. If you want to make sure your shorts look sharp rather than shabby, pick a tailored, belted style such as these linen shorts, as seen on Ramzan Miah. Add a leather belt, loafers and tuck in a crisp shirt, and the result is an outfit that’s going to get attention for only the right reasons.

Style tip: lighten those layers

You can rely on the summer weather to be extremely unreliable, hence a wardrobe that consists entirely of shorts and T-shirts is going to cause problems. Instead, you need light, breathable layers in seasonal tones – nothing too dark and heavy. Tom Lloyd (@thomas.m.lloyd) nails the less-than-boiling-summer-day look with this cream overshirt paired with a white shirt and cotton-rich corduroy trousers. Loosely tuck in the shirt and wear with an open collar for a more laid-back feel.

Style tip: embrace pattern

If ever there was a summer to embrace the joy of print and colour, it’s this one. For some people, joyful dressing means full-on, look-at-me style – if this if you, then a gloriously exuberant Hawaiian shirt will tick the box. Others prefer a more pared-back approach to pattern, such as a simple striped shirt, like the one worn here by our very own M&S Insider Rob (@marksandspencer_rob). It looks great worn over a white T-shirt with slim-fit chinos, or team with shorts as the weather gets warmer.
