Lovely but why the leg elastic?

All the boxers I've ever seen have been hemmed with a simple seam around the thigh - except these ones, which for some reason have elastic around the hem? Looked very unflattering and was uncomfortable as the elastic was so tight, so I had to cut it off which was annoying and a waste. Otherwise they are lovely - soft fabric, comfy and fit well. I hope m&s will keep making boxers for girls as these seem to be the only ones on the site at the moment.
