Situated in the far southeast of the Limestone Coast area, Coonawarra is one of South Australia’s most important regions. It was here that the country’s oldest family-run winery Yalumba was founded in 1849, starting with just 30 acres of land in Angaston. Their now famous Menzies site was planted in 1975, matching Cabernet Sauvignon with the region’s central sandy loam and limestone ‘terra rossa’ soils. Winemaker Peter Gambetta selected the vineyards’ best fruit for this wine and then aged the wine in a combination of French, American and Hungarian oak barrels for 18 months.
