Essentials for mum-to-be and baby, from dressing gowns and nursing bras to soft baby clothing and hats
Alongside nappies and wipes, you’ll need clothes for your new arrival. One pack of sleepsuits with a pack of vests should do – plus a hat for their little newborn head!
If you’re breastfeeding, you’ll need nursing bras, which offer comfortable support as well as cups that unclip for speedy access. Pack breast pads and nipple cream, too.
Most women will stay in hospital for at least one night, post-birth, so comfy nightwear is a must. Choose between button-down PJs (great for breastfeeding) or a nightdress.
Pack your washbag with essentials: your toothbrush and toothpaste, lip balm, deodorant, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, moisturiser. A cooling spray is also handy.
If you’re nervous about feeling a bit exposed on the maternity ward or when you have visitors, it’s worth bringing a dressing gown with you. Bonus points for comfy slippers.
When it comes to post-birth knickers, the bigger the better. You’re likely to bleed, so remember to bring maternity pads – these anti-leak knickers are another good option.
If there’s one thing you definitely need with a newborn baby it’s a never-ending supply of muslins to mop up various bodily fluids. Don’t say we didn’t warn you…
While the hospital will probably provide towels, you’ll feel much more at home taking some of your own for that much-needed post-birth shower.
Don’t forget the seasonal extras for taking your baby home – if it’s winter you’ll want additional layers such as a pramsuit and warm hat for the journey.
Your bump won’t go down for a week or so after birth, so bring loose, comfy clothes, such as those in our maternity dressing guide, for the hospital and journey home.
