THE TRENDS TO TRY NOW

Melbourne Fashion Week is back, and to celebrate we’re showcasing the very best of new-season style – fresh from the catwalk

Check it out

From Prince of Wales to houndstooth, gingham to micro: checks are the print of the season. The secret to nailing the look is to team coordinating checks together, as seen best at Búl where matching skirts and coats took centre stage. Break up the pattern with complementary neutral pieces; think a check trench over a classic white tee and black pants, or a tan top with camel-accented pants. Want to really dial up the checks? Go for our coordinating suit set and don’t forget to add a bag.

Dress up your denim

Every wardrobe needs a great pair of jeans, but a jumpsuit, shirt or even kimono is a great way to freshen up your denim look. As seen at Handsom, denim is quickly becoming a staple fabric for every part of your casual wardrobe. Start by pairing your favourite jeans with a denim shirt (the double denim trend shows no sign of abating), then try teaming a denim dress in classic blue or cool cream with western boots. For a bolder take, make like our Insider Dominique with a green denim jumpsuit.

Give tone-on-tone a try

This may be the easiest trend to come out of Melbourne Fashion Week: wearing a blend of tones from head to toe. The trick is to team shades of the same colour together: think rich plum with lilac, sky blue with navy, or – our favourite – beige with deep tan. Lois Hazel showed it best with coordinating knitwear and floaty skirts for a boho-meets-the-desert feel that feels just right for the winter-spring transition. A turtle-neck top and fit-and-flare skirt look particularly good together with boots or, come the sunshine, leather sandals.
