Every woman needs one good suit in her wardrobe – an essential for that work presentation, job interview or those days you need a little confidence boost. When the occasion calls for something smarter, give your jacket and pants combo a new lease of life with a sleeveless top or lace-trimmed camisole, delicate silver necklace and standout shoes. These knockout ankle-strap platforms come in cream and gold. Or, add a waistcoat to make a real style statement in a three-piece suit or try a shirt, tie and slingbacks. The stripey top

Next up is our favourite French-girl must-have. We’re not talking about a warm, crusty baguette, but the everyone-needs-one-in-their-wardrobe stripey top. Its ever-chic status has secured its place in our office uniform wardrobe. The striped top and wide-leg pants are a dream duo but, for a bit of variety, pair it with the ‘it’ skirt of the season – the denim midi. Add ballet pumps à la Brigitte Bardot. For a cool nineties’ vibe, layer over a satin slip dress or embrace clashing prints with a bold-print skirt or pants.

The oversized shirt

There are some days when only an oversized shirt will do. Smart, stylish and very forgiving, it’s a sartorial stalwart. Show off your fashion credentials by wearing it as a jacket over bodysuit and the bottom-half choice du jour – cargo pants. Or have it half buttoned up over a mini skirt with flat slingbacks. The metallic of the moment is silver so, for elevated work attire, tuck your oversized shirt into low-slung wide-leg pants with a silver-buckle belt. Add a pair of classic loafers and you’re all set.
