This gently spicy, easy-drinking red is an intriguing hybrid. Aromatically it owes much to the classic styles of the southern Rhône, with its floral, baked red fruits and gentle spice. On the palate, though, it is less rich and warming than the nose might suggest, with an elegantly savoury, refreshingly structured character that is both food-friendly and very moreish. This is the result of some inspired winemaking by Pierre Martin at La Compagnie Rhodanienne, who blended local grape Grenache with Merlot (50%) and Cabernet (40%) from fruit grown in the Rhône delta between Arles and the Mediterranean.
