KESTIN HARE:
PRINTS CHARMING

As we launch M&S &, a new set of collaborations with some of the fashion world’s finest, Ian Wright talks to Kestin Hare, the menswear designer putting craftsmanship at the heart of everything he does

Kestin on the fabrics

“During my 15 years as head of design at Nigel Cabourn and later with my own label, I worked with some fantastic manufacturers and factories producing luxurious materials, which are always the starting point for my work.

Our brand has built a reputation for using unique and quality fabrics so it was important that we brought similarly superior materials to this collaboration.

In selecting fabrics we worked closely with the team at M&S, who then sourced a beautiful range from top Italian mills.”

Kestin on the design

“We called the collection ‘Sabbatical Botanical’ as it draws inspiration from early British explorers on safari.

We researched different vintage pieces that were worn by Victorian-era travellers, looking at interesting details such as vintage-style pockets and whitewashed wooden buttons, and incorporated them in a contemporary way.

The overall fit is quite relaxed, particularly the outerwear and knits, which contrasts nicely with the tailored elements across the trousers and shorts. Most of the pieces are designed to be easily dressed up or down.”

Kestin on the prints

“We used specially developed floral and botanical prints based on exotic plants and flowers the explorers might have found on their travels.

Foliage translates well into print, particularly for spring, as it’s very wearable and gives a great injection of colour.

Look out for the bold iris patterns on the short-sleeved shirts and the printed linings hidden in the jackets and trousers.”
