THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO BUYING A SUIT

Whether you’re looking for a sharp two piece for work or weddings, we have everything you need to know when choosing this formal-wardrobe essential

Consider the occasion

As keen as you might (or might not) be to start browsing the rails, before you begin your search, one simple question needs to be answered: where are you going in it? If you’re lost of in a sea of suit styles, the occasion and dress code will help you make your choice. If you have black-tie or formal event coming up, a tuxedo or dark suit will be what you’re looking for. For a formal work setting, you’ll need a business suit with a double-breasted jacket in darker shades, such as navy or charcoal. For the more casual events, such as weddings, you have the freedom to choose lighter or bolder colours, relaxed fits and experiment with pattern.

Ensure the perfect fit

The trusty suit is the one wardrobe item that can give you a boost in confidence and a sense of professionalism when you need it – if the fit is spot on, that is. Sadly, it’s oh-so easy to get it wrong. When it comes to the suit jacket, pay attention to the shoulder fit and jacket length – it should reach the base of your thumb. Sleeve length should reveal a quarter to half an inch of cuff. When trying the pants, the waistband should sit at the navel. The seat should fit snugly without being tight and the bottoms should touch your shoes without puddling.

The finishing touches

In the words of Leonardo Da Vinci (get us!): details make perfection. When it comes to jacket pocket styles, choose from patch pockets – great for a more casual look; flap pockets for a formal occasions and work suits; or jet pockets, often found on tuxedos and formal suits. Go for a dress shirt to complement the shade of your suit, not forgetting the classic tie or bow tie and optional pocket square for formal events. Traditionalists can match their belt and dress shoes. When choosing socks, if you don’t want them the showpiece of your formal look, make them at least one shade darker than your pants. Beware choosing the exact-same-colour shoes and socks – you could look like you’re wearing boots.
