HOW TO

BUY A FIRST BRA

Head of M&S lingerie design Soozie Jenkinson shares her top tips for buying a first bra, from finding the perfect fit to avoiding any embarrassment

When to buy a first bra

Buying a first bra is a rite of passage on the journey towards adulthood, but when it happens depends on the individual; usually when puberty hits between the ages of eight and 14. It can be quite an anxious time, especially for younger girls if they’re one of the first amongst their peers to start wearing a bra. Likewise, being a late developer can cause similar issues. Remember to broach the subject gently and let them lead the way in shopping for a bra (a crop top is often a good first step for example) as children of this age are often very self-conscious.

How to measure for a first bra

Even though it’s possible to measure yourself for a bra, having it done by a professional fitter is always preferable. Why not book an appointment with our bra-fitting service in your local store? The expert fitters will be used to putting people at ease and remember that the fitting is done over your top, so there’s less chance of your daughter being or getting embarrassed. Each appointment lasts between 15-30 minutes.

If you don’t live near a store that does bra-fitting, we also have an online fitting service. This is also a good option if your child is extremely shy and worried about having a fitting in person.

Which first bra should I buy?

Developing breasts are very sensitive, so our range of first bras is designed to prevent any tissue damage, using soft fabrics and trimmings that are gentle against skin. We have a wide range of first bras for every occasion, from skin-toned bras that won’t show under school uniform such as blouses or gym tops to sporty crop tops featuring colourful prints and patterns.

And whilst you’re shopping for underwear, why not take the opportunity to pick up some first period briefs for them, too? There are plenty of styles to choose from in our range, and they’re all highly absorbent – ideal while they’re getting to grips with irregular periods, so they can feel prepared for whatever the day holds.
