THE FALL TREND GUIDE

This season’s catwalk-inspired looks are wonderfully wearable, from sweater dresses and checked blazers to adventure-ready ankle boots

Sporty sweaters

Cricket sweaters and rugby tops are the latest sportswear stars to be embraced by the fashion set. At Burberry, oversized cricket sweaters and rugby stripes gave a sporty spin to the proceedings, while at Versace, rugby-striped cardigans were styled over white shirts. Wear rugby tops small and pair with a dark denim midi skirt for a preppy look and team cricket knits with indigo boyfriend jeans and box-fresh white sneakers for off-duty style.

The chic jumper dress

The dress to own for fall is an elegant body-skimming knitted or jersey sweater style. Effortlessly chic, as comfortable as your favourite sweater and warm enough to take you through to winter, it’s the ultimate wear-everywhere wardrobe hero. Whether you go for a block colour or an all-over pattern, team with fall staples such as leather jackets and ankle boots or sneakers-and-denim-jacket combos.

Chunky ankle boots

Along with a weather-beating coat and cosy knitwear, a practical pair of boots is a key buy for making the most of crisp fall days. Chunky ankle boots are big news this season, with stompy slip-on Chelsea boots leading the charge and made-for-walking hiking boots back again. Equally comfortable, hard-wearing and cool, both are perfect for outdoorsy days and long walks. If you want to add edge to floral dresses or elevate jeans and sweater combinations, look no further.

Head-to-toe black

The mood was, well, moody on catwalks for fall, with head-to-toe black looks opening many shows including Celine and Valentino. Embrace the trend by adding a timeless black piece or two to your closet such as a luxurious cashmere sweater to team with cropped leather pants or PU leggings for a texture contrast. If head-to-toe black feels too severe, break it up with a white blouse, or dip your toe into the trend with a pair of chunky boots.

Checked coats and blazers

It’s hip to be square this season, with checks – whether they’re plaid, tartan, Prince of Wales or hound’s-tooth – making a welcome return for fall. The new way to wear checks is all together, clashing colour, scale and style to create a playful pattern pile-up. However, the easiest way to try the trend is to add one key piece to your closet, such as a checked coat or blazer, but dresses, pants, sweaters and blouses are all getting the square treatment too.
