From office to out

You know the conundrum: big night on a school night – the office Christmas party, perhaps – that you want to dress up for, but don’t want to look like Liberace in the meeting with accounts. So, what to do? A slim suit is perfectly fine in the day with your usual workwear, so all you need to do come 5pm is swap your work shirt for a dress shirt, whip on a bow tie (pre-tied if you’re tight for time) and some dancing shoes, and you’ll have switched up your look in a flash.

Black tie revisited

Dress codes can be a minefield for those of us who love to make a statement. But if you’ve got a black-tie event coming up, fear not. Here’s what to do: stick with the usual dress shoes – these ones have a pleasing matte section taking the edge off the fancy patent – and pants with a side stripe, but then go for it with the jacket. Green velvet works a treat, and nods to the holiday season nicely, while switching a bow tie for an almost-as-dressy textured dinner tie keeps everything suitably occasional.

Late-night drinks with attitude

It’s the holiday season so making an effort is de rigueur. Mix things up a bit with a formal-meets-fun look that you can put together in the time it takes to say, ‘shots?’ Start with a snazzy print – this lemur design is perfect – layered over a crisp white T-shirt. Then make a night of it with the addition of a shawl collar single-breasted jacket, worn undone to reflect the more casual attitude. Add smart dark denim jeans, rolled up over boots with a rocky edge, and you’re all set.
