We have around 2,000 product suppliers in over 70 countries. We’re a fair partner to our suppliers by ensuring good working conditions for everyone in our supply chains.
In 1999, we developed a set of principles in partnership with our suppliers. These principles set down our requirements for suppliers to comply with all relevant local and national laws, particularly on: working hours and conditions, health and safety, rates of pay, terms of employment and minimum age of employment.
As our relationship with a supplier develops, we expect them to improve working conditions in line with the more demanding standards promoted by the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), a collaborative group of companies, trade unions and human rights groups set up by the UK Government in 1998. M&S joined the ETI in 1999.
We use a combination of M&S, third- party and self-audits to assess supplier performance which are logged on a shared database known as SEDEX. Results are reported in detail to the ETI and summarised in our annual How We Do Business Report.

The Waste Batteries and Accumulators Decree (No. 2009-1139) came into effect in France in 2009. This was designed to prevent harmful chemicals contained in batteries from contaminating landfill by encouraging their responsible disposal.
The crossed-out wheelie bin symbol printed on batteries is there to remind customers not to dispose of them in household waste, but instead to take them to an appropriate facility where they can be disposed of safely.
As a member of Corepil, M&S customers can bring their waste batteries back in one of the several Corepil collection points across France. To find your nearest one visithttp://www.corepile.fr/carte-des-points-de-collecte and type in your postcode.
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Decree (No. 2005-829) came into effect in France in 2005. This was designed to prevent and reduce the amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment going to landfill by promoting its re-use, recycling and disposal in an environmentally responsible manner.
A crossed-out wheelie bin symbol represents electrical and electronic products which should not be disposed of in the normal waste stream, but should be taken to an appropriate facility to enable their recovery and recycling.
Waste electrical and electronic equipment take back is free of charge across all our France stores on a one-for-one basis, where equipment of a similar type is purchased in-store. To recycle your old items, simply hand them to a member of staff during your purchase.
Recycling centres set up by local authorities will also accept WEEE. To find your nearest recycling site, visit http://www.ecologic-france.com/recyclage-deee-particulier.html and type your postcode into the recycling bank locator.
The Eco-Tax or èco-participation is a fee worked into the cost of a product that goes into the recycling fund of an eco-organisation. This finances the collection and recycling of the WEEE product.
The fee is different depending on the type of EEE purchased. Different types of products are grouped under different ‘PAM’ codes – these correspond to a different cost as follows:
|France EEE Code||M&S Product Type||Cost without VAT,EUR||Cost with VAT,EUR|
|PAM01||Watches, Small Toys, Travel Alarm Clocks||0.0084||0.01|
|PAM02||Medium Clocks, Gadgets, Toys||0.03||0.04|
|PAM04||Large Clocks, Kitchen Appliances||0.13||0.16|
On January 1, 2015, a Decree requiring the display of the environmental logo “Triman” (Décret du 23 décembre 2014 no 2014-1577 relatif à la signalétique Common des produits recyclables here relevent d’une consigne de tri) was passed in France.
This regulation requires that all companies who place various types of recyclable packaging and products covered by the Extended Producer Responsibility (with the exclusion of glass packaging) onto the French market, must inform customers if their products or packaging are separately collected for recycling by displaying the unified marking required by the Decree: the TRIMAN symbol.
The purpose of the TRIMAN symbol is to identify recyclable packaging/products that are designated for sorting and separate collection.
Below are the examples of various types of M&S products and packaging which are recyclable and form part of the recycling/sorting system in France:
- Paper/board packaging
- Some plastic packaging (refer to the sorting instructions via the link provided below)
- Apparel and textiles products
- Household linens
- Paper products
- Plastic bottles and their screw caps
- Tins & cans
