Weddings require even more thought and planning when you have kids in tow. Whatever your little one’s role, their outfit needs to fit with the theme and be comfy and practical. Kidswear editor Maggie Davis reveals her top tips and tricks
If you’re a bride-to-be looking for the perfect bridesmaid dress or flower girl frock, think about your colour scheme and overall theme and find a style that fits. Get inspired with our selection of dreamy dresses for girls
Follow your child’s natural sense of style. Girls don’t necessarily have to wear pale pastels (unless the bride dictates), so if your girl looks good in navy or black, consider styles in richer shades. The same applies to boys – a pale, summery suit might be just the ticket, but navy, grey and black look just as smart for the right event
There’s a lot of hanging around at weddings, and for kids to enjoy the occasion they need to feel comfortable. Make sure their clothes fit – ideally, don’t buy outfits more than three months in advance – and their shoes are as comfy as can be. Take a look at our Mary Janes and ballet pumps for girls and lace-up brogues for boys
If your wee one isn’t participating in the ceremony, it’s still worth checking the theme with the bride-to-be. Pick an outfit that works (but doesn’t compete with) the overall look, so if the bridesmaids are wearing yellow, go for something in a different yet compatible hue
It’s easy to get carried away and dress your kids up as mini grown-ups, but while you might have a strong idea about what you want them to wear, let them have some input, even if it’s choosing between two outfits or picking the accessories themselves. Teenagers in particular will want to have a big say in what they wear. Remember: happy kids make for a happy occasion
