When celebrating your daughter’s wedding day, you want to look and feel your most stylish (after all, you are the second most important woman in the room). Read on for our failsafe mother of the bride fashion advice…

The classic look

It’s your daughter’s day, so let her be your sartorial guide. It’s traditional for the mother of the bride to dress in a similar palette to the bridesmaids, but if head-to-toe sugary hues aren’t for you, simply accessorise within the palette instead. If you’re more comfortable in a classic outfit, like a shift dress and jacket, why not add a glittery shoulder bag or glamorous shoes, to really make a statement. A little sparkle goes a long way. Whatever the season, delicate fabrics such as chiffon and silk are always a safe bet for the elegant mother of the bride. And remember, most important of all is to wear what you’re comfortable in, so you can focus on the enjoying the day.

The monochrome look

Monochrome is a bold and stylish choice for the mother of the bride. Don’t be deterred by others telling you that it’s not appropriate to wear black or white (or both) – it’s no longer a fashion faux pas. An elegant black lace dress, accessorised with contrasting colours (think a blush fascinator, ivory clutch or even bright pops of colour on your nails), can look effortlessly stylish for daytime and evening. Equally, a monochrome jacket is the finishing touch to the perfect mother of the bride look, thrown over a smart floral dress or paired with simple black trousers and a silk top. Go for dresses and tops with a bracelet-length sleeve, and invest in some jewellery bought especially for the day. Each time you wear it afterwards, you’ll have special memories of the big day.

The floral look

Florals are perfect for the mother of the bride, whatever the season. For a spring or summer wedding, why not choose a light-coloured, contemporary floral dress with mid-length sleeves. Accessorise with a pashmina or short, smart jacket in a plain, complementary colour. If your daughter is having an autumn or winter wedding, try a chic floral jacket. Choose a fabric that will take your look from daytime to dance floor such as satin, or even a jacket that features 3D embellishment, like beading or embroidery. Ensure you stand out from the other guests with a statement hat or fascinator; go for light, pretty fabrics and a colour that works with your outfit, not against it. Shoes with a mid heel are best: too flat and you might not feel dressy enough, too high and you could be in agony. Remember that you might be on your feet for over eight hours.
